Miscellaneous Pearls

Schedules (clinic and call) can be found on the New Innovations Website, check this often.

Always check beforehand the new month's schedule, especially for call and clinic days. Never make assumptions about next month's schedule.  Clinic days almost always change from month to month.

Mass and/or written pages can be done through Nancy or Arch.com.

Page codes after the #:

'*9' = Resident/Attending paging

'-0' = Code Blue/Cor

‘-911' = Come and/or Respond STAT

When you write for a consult order, specify date & time or it will be done soon after your order even if it's late and not urgent. Some docs (ie Nephrologists) specifically don’t want to be consulted after 4pm unless it’s an emergency. Specify reason for consult.

Specify what is being looked for and the indication of imaging orders (U/S, X-rays, CT, MRI, etc)

Dr. Haney (Urology), when consulted, prefers to discuss the patient personally, rather than by written order.

Dr. Hulet, Dr. Tonsing, and Dr. Morgan (OBs) prefer to be called directly at home after 5-6pm for consultations. L&D has their contact preferences and numbers.

Dr. Smith (Surgery) prefers that he make any changes to IVF & abx orders.

Use 'prn' orders judiciously, especially with sedatives. RNs may abuse them. Consider 1-dose orders.

New guidelines: Always write “daily” instead of “qd” on orders.

Food for breakfast and lunch can always be found in the Doctor's and Surgeon's lounge when needed. Breakfast post-call and meal on call are paid for in the cafeteria; limit per meal is $9.00 currently.  Make sure to grab dinner prior to 6:30 pm (cafeteria closes promptly).

Vacation Guidelines: Use ‘em or lose ‘em. Cannot take more than 5 weekdays off per calendar month.  Cannot take off the last 2 weeks of academic year.  Watch out for rotations like pediatrics and surgery where days off add from year to year.  Plan vacations EARLY if at all possible.
